What process do you need?
Counseling is a process for gaining insight useful in setting overall life direction through understanding one's history or story. Coaching focuses on goals, skills, and the tools one needs for personal growth and a balanced life. I like to think of counseling as searching out the meaning of one's life, and coaching as a way of honing the practices that will actually help one live better by making positive changes.
A third process is spiritual direction. A person who wants to engage in spiritual direction brings his or her life into focus explicitly with the idea and hope of discerning where God is in the details of one's life.
How do you know what is the best process for you? Let's chat about it. Much depends on your own orientation and experience.
Counseling
As a pastoral counselor with both Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees, I am able to supply counseling in any number of situations, although as a general rule, I do not accept clients who need or desire long-term counseling. Some examples of the kind of counseling I do include grief counseling, crisis counseling (in situations of sickness, transition, trauma, and major life changes), sexual orientation and gender issues, and religious issues. I do limited relationship and marriage counseling, and some career counseling—though not career placement.
Coaching
Is your challenge to set goals and meet them? Do you need support as you navigate the tricky waters of intra-organizational conflict? Are you looking for ways to spur volunteers to action, build effective teams, develop leadership or figure out staff organization? Perhaps your issues have to do with personal priorities, setting goals, balancing work and personal life. I have years of experience in coaching people in all walks of life through these and similar challenges. Call me for a no-obligation chat (202 5185 8432), or shoot me an email: frank@frankgdunn.com.
Spiritual Direction
If you want to take a steady look at your life in the context of where your soul longs to go and be, or if your orientation is specifically spiritual and you want to look at ways to develop yourself spiritually, let’s explore spiritual direction.
For me, in all these processes yours and my relationship is central and integral. But the last thing I want to do is to be a part of a counseling, coaching, or spiritual direction effort that ill fits either you or me. You and your growth are central to me. Let’s talk about how any one of these might look as you go forward to realize your full human potential. Let's see if we are a good fit for each other. Email me: frank@frankgdunn.com
